Inspired by 2 brothers who founded the company in order to make small amounts of credit available to people who needed quick cash and flexible lending durations, MYJAR now funds everything from home repairs to travel expenses with loans up to £3600 with flexible durations of 3–12 months. You could say it’s a bank for the regular people. There’s a simple online application based on a sophisticated underwriting system. No bank visits. No imposing loan officer.

Founded in Estonia in 2008, MYJAR now has offices in London and Tallinn. With their Customer Operations and Technology team of 130 people based in Tallinn and 27 employees in London, their multicultural team speaks 17 languages, albeit not all at once. The office working language is English. With an average age of 30, most of their employees work in the office, although some occasionally work remotely, giving them flexibility to live outside the city center. MYJAR also welcomes part-timers who mostly work in the call center, some for work-life balance, and others so they can continue their studies or other projects.
An office of “beautiful ideas”
What makes this company unique as an employer? I spoke with Lisell Veskimeister, HR Manager who told me, “our staff actually become friends when they’re working here, so we have a lot of casual beautiful ideas, where we like to hang around and talk about interesting things. Staff likes to share new ideas, organize events, start traditions and share information about subjects of interest to them.” This makes for an environment where knowledge and new ideas are celebrated among the staff. Most importantly, Lisell continues, “Our teams like to have fun and share a witty sense of humor and a love for cats… yes, cats are a thing here. Although dogs are welcome too and we have canine visitors in the office from time to time — this is a proven and immediate method for stress relief!
Lisell also says, “We’re not just colleagues, but friends. We love to run social events both inside and outside the office. We like to reward great performance and will always look to promote from within the team. We like to challenge our staff and recognize that everyone can improve.“

They recently raised money for a local animal shelter and cancer foundation in Estonia through donations from their employees. They will be attending an annual charity event called the Rat Race in Estonia in June. This is a charity event that supports children who need constant hospital care by giving them a dream day where the kids choose what they want to do. Lisell says these charities, “bring the office together and allow us to do something fun together while doing good.”
